At Southtowns Radiology there is a special focus on women’s imaging.  This is why we offer the latest technology in women’s imaging, including digital mammography, which is performed in the comfort of our outpatient facilities.  The ever evolving field of women’s imaging has opened new doors for screening and diagnosis giving women even more options to take control of their health.

Digital mammography, performed at every Southtowns Radiology location, is the gold standard of mammography imaging and yet many women are not clear on what the differences are from a traditional exam.

Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system for examination of the breasts.  Most medical experts agree that successful treatment of breast cancer often is linked to early diagnosis.  With a traditional mammogram, the x-ray images are recorded on film using a cassette.  The images are then transferred to film to be viewed on a ‘light box’ and the films stored in the facility’s archive.

With digital mammography, the breast image is captured using a special x-ray phosphorous detector which converts the images to a digital file that can be viewed on a computer monitor.  The digital mammogram is then stored on a computer. With digital mammography, the magnification, orientation, brightness, and contrast of the image may be altered after the exam is completed to help the radiologist more clearly define certain areas.

One can easily compare the differences in traditional and digital mammography to the technological difference between having an important document in a paper file or on a computer file, except in this case it is a file that must be meticulously viewed and scrutinized.  Having the latest in technological advances to aide in the review of mammogram files can make a difference in the ability to detect early signs of cancer.

The experience of having a mammogram is largely the same with both traditional and digital mammography.  This makes it additionally difficult for women to know whether they are having a digital mammogram when they go for their annual exam.  The best way to understand your options are to ask your doctor or ask the facility where you are having your exam performed whether they offer digital mammography.  We encourage women to choose a facility that offers digital mammography like Southtowns Radiology.
